Headunit wattage question

ok, lets say you have a headunit that says 50x4. really its like 22.5rmsx4. Lets say instead of hooking up 4 speakers you hook up 2. would wiring the two speakers in normally push 50rms watts to each speaker instead of 22.5rms or would you have to take the two sets of speaker wires from the headunit and wire them both to that one speaker to produce the 50rms? and does this even how that works?
